How OKX is setting a new standard of AML compliance in DeFi

Elliptic x OKX

Key takeaway: OKX embedded Elliptic Lens into its decentralized infrastructure to detect financial crime risk in real time, setting the highest AML standard for decentralized finance.

At a glance

  • Customer: OKX Web3, the decentralized, self-custody arm of OKX
  • Product: Elliptic Lens via API
  • Use case: Real-time wallet and transaction screening on its decentralized products
  • Outcome: Centralized exchange-grade controls built directly into its infrastructure

OKX Web3 is the decentralized, self-custody arm of OKX, one of the world's largest cryptoasset exchanges. OKX is known for strong financial crime controls on its centralized platform, and OKX Web3 set out to bring that same protection to its decentralized products.

The challenge: bringing AML controls to DeFi

OKX’s main decentralized trading product is OKX DEX Aggregator, an on-chain aggregator built into the OKX Web3 Wallet. Rather than holding its own liquidity, OKX DEX Aggregator routes each trade across many decentralized exchanges to find the best price, and because it is non-custodial, assets stay in the user's own wallet.

Decentralized trading has largely grown up without financial crime screening, and most DEXs still offer little or none. OKX Web3 saw an opportunity to lead and set out to future-proof its decentralized infrastructure, holding OKX DEX Aggregator to the same security and user-protection standards OKX is known for on its centralized platform. That meant solving for four things at once:

  • Exchange-grade AML screening on decentralized infrastructure, where OKX Web3 enforces risk decisions by screening wallets and blocking trades
  • Real-time risk decisions at scale, embedded directly into automated trading flows instead of manual review queues
  • Risk intelligence accurate enough to act on automatically, without flooding the compliance team with false positives or adding friction for users
  • Assurance for institutional users, who increasingly asked whether OKX DEX Aggregator’s counterparties were being screened for financial crime

The solution: Elliptic Lens built directly into OKX DEX Aggregator

OKX Web3 integrated Elliptic Lens, Elliptic's wallet and transaction screening solution, into OKX DEX Aggregator through Elliptic's API. Screening happens at the wallet level:

  • Before a trade proceeds, the initiating wallet is screened against Elliptic's industry-leading risk intelligence
  • For institutional bridging or swapping, the receiving wallet is screened as well
  • High-risk wallets are blocked. OKX Web3 cannot freeze assets, so it rejects the trade or denies access to its UI instead
  • Screening stays current rather than fixed. Elliptic's intelligence team continuously updates risk labels as new threats emerge

This replaces manual reviews and internally maintained blacklists with richer, automated risk intelligence, while preserving the speed users expect from a decentralized platform.

The result: a higher standard for decentralized trading

Embedding Lens into OKX DEX Aggregator changed both how OKX Web3 operates and how it stands in the market. Screening now runs automatically on every trade rather than through manual review. The clearest payoff is user protection. wBroader effects include:

  • Approximately 15 million wallets screened since implementation in July 2025
  • Exchange-grade controls now run on DeFi, a bar most DEX protocols do not meet
  • Greater confidence for institutional clients in DEX counterparties
  • Stronger protection for users against known crypto crime typologies

Taken together, these outcomes show that a non-custodial platform can embed exchange-grade controls without sacrificing the speed or openness that draws users to DeFi. That puts OKX Web3 among the few decentralized products operating to a centralized exchange's compliance standard, and gives it a foundation to extend the same controls as it expands.

What’s next: growing its decentralized infrastructure

The same programmatic screening solution that runs on OKX DEX Aggregator gives the company a model it can extend wherever value moves on-chain. The area drawing the most attention is agentic payments

As autonomous agents begin to initiate transactions without a human in the loop, risk checks have to happen programmatically and in real time, at machine speed, which is exactly what Lens was built to support.

Beyond payments, OKX Web3 is looking at extending the same controls to prediction markets, perpetual trading and X Layer, its own EVM Layer-2 network built to support the next generation of on-chain applications. The direction is clear: OKX is building its decentralized products to be as secure and trustworthy as its centralized counterpart.
